The Wallabies start another quest for elusive Bledisloe Cup success when they host the All Blacks in Sydney in what is effectively the 2015 Rugby Championship decider.

As predicted, Wallabies coach Michael Cheika has opted to start with David Pocock at No.8, with Michael Hooper coming in as openside flanker. Dean Mumm and James Horwill replace younger lock duo Will Skelton (who has been retained on the bench) and Rob Simmons, while Scott Sio and Sekope Kepu come back into the front-row. Out wide, Matt Giteau returns at No.12, Drew Mitchell comes back from injury on the wing, and Waratahs duo Nick Phipps and Bernard Foley have been retained as the scrum-base duo, with Nic White, Matt Toomua and Kurtley Beale on the bench.

The All Blacks have made six changes to the side that defeated the Springboks a fortnight ago. Julian Savea makes his first Test appearance of the season, while his Hurricanes teammate Nehe Milner-Skudder will debut on the other wing, which sees Ben Smith revert to his preferred fullback spot. Sonny Bill Williams comes back in at inside centre with Ma’a Nonu injured, and Dan Carter returns in the place of Lima Sopoaga. Jerome Kaino and Luke Romano come back into the pack for Liam Messam and James Broadhurst respectively.

New Zealand leads the all-time tally 104 wins to Australia’s 41, with seven drawn. On Australian soil, the All Blacks are in front 48-24-6. In Sydney, it’s 22-13-1, although at ANZ Stadium the Kiwis only hold a 7-6-1 lead since 1999 – but they are unbeaten in their last five visits, last losing at the venue back in 2008. Last year, the teams drew 12-all at ANZ before the Wallabies were trounced 51-20 at Eden Park a week later. The All Blacks scored a nail-biting last-minute 29-28 victory in Brisbane in October, extending their unbeaten run against the Wallabies to 10 matches; Australia has not tasted victory against New Zealand since the 2011 Tri Nations.

Australia backed up their last-gasp victory over South Africa in the Rugby Championship opener with a 34-9 defeat of Argentina in Mendoza, avenging their infamous defeat at the venue a year earlier. After leading just 8-6 at halftime, the Wallabies powered to a comfortable victory with three tries in the final 22 minutes, while keeping their line intact for the full 80. The poor performances of flyhalf Bernard Foley and Quade Cooper, who entered the match from the bench early at inside-centre, were a concern, but David Pocock and Israel Folau were outstanding.

New Zealand accounted for Argentina 39-18 to put a scratchy nine-point win over Samoa a week earlier behind them. The defending champs then ventured to the always imposing Ellis Park and scored a superb come-from-behind 27-20 victory over South Africa in an enthralling encounter. Winger Charles Piatau and debutant flyhalf Lima Sopoaga were the standouts for the All Blacks, while hooker Dane Coles stole the show with a stunning individual try.

David Pocock has been outstanding all year for the Brumbies and Wallabies, resuming his role as a genuine leader and a tenacious loose forward at Test level after a long international rugby layoff. Moved to No.8 for this clash, Pocock’s showdown with Kieran Read, who is regarded by many as the best player in world rugby, is worth the price of admission alone.

Just one of the last eight trans-Tasman Tests played in Australia has been decided by more than eight points. Two of the last four Australia-hosted Tests have finished in draws. During the All Blacks’ 10-match unbeaten run against the Wallabies, they average 29.4 points scored per game to 18.1 conceded.

Despite the fact that the Wallabies achieved a draw and a gut-wrenching one-point loss against the All Blacks on home soil last year – and the absence of top-liners such as Sam Whitelock and Ma’a Nonu from the world champs’ line-up – there’s no doubt they are rank outsiders heading into this clash. The Wallabies’ lack of continuity and cohesion in key positions, particularly the inside backs, is the biggest concern, while the jury is still out on their set piece. The ANZ Stadium factor should ensure a relatively close contest, however, with the 5-point line in the home side’s favour a tempting bet. But the prevalence of world-class, in-form strike weapons out wide and a ruthless forward pack means the ABs will be very difficult to get near. While both sides left it late before pipping the Springboks, New Zealand’s effort in doing so in Johannesburg was considerably more impressive than Australia’s injury-time success as hosts.

The winner of the match in Sydney on Saturday, between Australia and New Zealand, will be a double winner.

The winner will claim SANZAR’s Rugby Championship – the old Tri-Nations plus Argentina – and take a step closer to winning the Bledisloe Cup.

Unsurprisingly, the All Blacks hold the Bledisloe Cup and the Rugby Championship.

A victory for Australia would put them in line to snatch both titles.

They could do it, but it would not be easy and would be regarded as a surprise.

The All Blacks give nothing away on the field, they will not gladly divest themselves of these two titles, and they have a great team, playing great rugby, to ward off any threat.

A Wallaby victory would be something of a miracle and fill the rest of the world with awe.  Possible? Of course, it’s possible.

Anybody who was at Twickenham for the World Cup semifinal in 1999, when France were 10-24 down and came back to beat New Zealand, knows that it is possible.

Since then, anybody who predicts an outcomes knows he is on shaky ground.

First of all, the Australians are by nature resilient and competitive. Secondly they have the skill of men like Israel Folau and Matt Giteau. Thirdly they have rugged and unyielding individuals such as Adam Ashley-Cooper, Tevita Kuridrani, David Pocock, Michael Hooper and their front row, which must be the best that Australia has had in living memory. And there is experience enough in Drew Mitchell, Ashley-Cooper and Giteau.

That is all very well till you look at the All Blacks with eyes filled with wonder. Look from fullback to scrumhalf and shake your head in amazement. It’s hard to pick a better backline from the rest of the world.

It’s odd to think that the Wallabies best bet may be in the pack, especially in those loose forwards – youthful, fearless Pocock and Hooper against veteran Richie McCaw for the loose ball. Of course, McCaw, scrums apart, may get a lot of help from Dane Coles, the lively hooker.

But at the tackle he may not get immediate help from Kieran Read on the overlap or even Jerome Kaino, who is forceful rather than subtle.

Clearly the All Blacks want a powerful flank – Liam Messam last time and Kaino this time.

Mind you, the Wallabies have their strong man in Scott Fardy, who offers more in the line-outs and in speed about the field.

That’s post-tackle ball. What about first-phase ball. The Wallaby scrum – dare we say it in more than a low whisper – may just have the beating of the All Black scrum. They stood up better to the first-choice Springboks than the All Blacks did.

Line-outs? Surely the All Blacks have a distinct edge there with an array of jumpers. Mind you, chubby Cheika may have made plans.

The kicking game? But will they kick much and in any case both sides have judicious kickers who want more out of their kicking than transferring possession.

Goal-kicking? In both sides the flyhalf is the designated kicker with bench back-up in Nic White and Beauden Barrett. But Daniel Carter (much more experienced) and Bernard Foley.

Both sides have the ability to score exciting tries and if they get on the run with their usual speed, straightness and quick passing, this could just be the most exciting match of the year.

For Australia: Certainly the skill of Israel Folau and the determination of David Pocock at the breakdown.

For New Zealand: Kieran Read, Richie McCaw, Brodie Retallick and the whole New Zealand backline. One would certainly have an eye on elusive, energetic Nehe Milner-Skudder.

Head to Head: Front row versus front row: Scott Sio, Stephen Moore and Sekope Sio of Australia versus Tony Woodcock, Dane Coles and Owen Franks of New Zealand. David Pocock versus Richie McCaw at the tackle especially. Bernard Foley versus Dan Carter at flyhalf. Loquacious Nick Phipps versus Aaron Smith.

NZ All Blacks Teams Name For Bledisloe Cup Game vs Wallabies

August 6, 2015 by admin Leave a Comment

The New Zealand All Blacks have announced their team to play the Wallabies in the opening Bledisloe Cup match of 2015.

The starting team has had six changes, positional and personnel, from New Zealand’s come-from-behind win over South Africa in Johannesburg two weeks ago.

Dan Carter returns as the starting flyhalf, with Sonny Bill Williams to start at inside centre in place of the injured Ma’a Nonu.

There’s plenty of experience in the front row, with Owen Franks and Tony Woodcock starting the game, and the dynamic Dane Coles playing hooker.

Luke Romano will partner Brodie Retallick in the locks, while Jerome Kaino makes his return on the blindside flank for the All Blacks.

Julian Savea will play on the left hand side of the field, with Nehe Milner-Skudder, the livewire Hurricanes winger, to partner him. It’s an exciting prospect for New Zealand, with Milner-Skudder showing jet shoes and tremendous tackle breaking ability in the Super Rugby season. It will be his All Blacks debut.

Ben Smith moves from the wing to fullback.

It looks a strong team, and one that the Wallabies will feel is in form and has plenty of experience.

Coach Steve Hansen was complimentary of their opponents, saying that this was an important game for the reigning world champions.

“The Bledisloe Cup is an important trophy for New Zealand rugby and for this team, and Australia is one of our oldest opponents. We are well aware that they have made improvements and that their coach Cheika wants them to be more physical and more consistent.

“Having said that, we are always looking to improve our game and understand that we will have to take a step up from our Ellis Park performance. This means we will need to bring physicality, intensity and accuracy to the occasion. I am picking this to be a brutal contest, and one we are looking forward to. It will be about us implementing our gameplan and skillsets for 80-plus minutes.”

Bledisloe Cup Game 1 Wallabies Teams Name For vs All Blacks

August 6, 2015 by admin Leave a Comment

The Wallabies have marked a return to the days of playing two openside flankers in the same run-on side, with Australia naming Michael Hooper and David Pocock to start against the All Blacks in the first Bledisloe Cup match of 2015.

Hooper and Pocock have both been in great form in Super Rugby, and played very strong games in their starting roles against South Africa and Argentina.

This has led Michael Cheika to name Pocock at number 8 for Bledisloe 1 in Sydney, with Hooper to play openside flanker.

Cheika has opted for a side with plenty of experience in the game that will decide the 2015 Rugby Championship, naming Drew Mitchell on the wing and Matt Giteau at inside centre, alongside Bernard Foley and Nick Phipps in the halves.

Scott Sio and Sekope Kepu will start in the front row ahead of Reds pair Greg Holmes and James Slipper, who have been relegated to the bench.

Adam Ashley-Cooper, Israel Folau and Tevita Kuridrani all retain their spots.

The second row also has a different look about it, with Dean Mumm to partner James Horwill. Will Skelton will come from the bench.

Cheika said picking both Pocock and Hooper in the same squad was a reward for form.

“Both players have been in outstanding form for club and country this season and have shown their class in sharing the spot in the first two matches.

“They now have an opportunity to start a Test together which they are very excited about.”

Cheika said prop Scott Sio had earned his run-on debut for Australia.

“We have been impressed with Scott since joining the Wallabies group and he has worked extremely hard to put himself in this position,” said Cheika.
