Australia begin the defence of their Rugby Championship title in a highly anticipated clash against their trans-Tasman rivals, New Zealand, in Sydney on Saturday.

Although both sides will be keen to hit the ground running in this Bledisloe Cup showdown, the Wallabies will be on a mission to redeem themselves in front of their home fans after they suffered a humiliating 3-0 series defeat against England in Australia during June.

By contrast, New Zealand head into this clash brimming with confidence as they claimed a 3-0 series victory over Wales earlier this year.

Although they were under the cosh for large periods in their opening Test against Wales in Auckland, the All Blacks soon hit their straps and displayed the type of form which helped them to win the World Cup in England last year.

That means that the world champions have won their last 11 matches on the trot by an average margin of 27 points, although it will be at the back of their minds that their previous defeat was against the Wallabies at the same venue in Sydney last year.

That result, and the return to the Test starting line-up of their overseas-based trio of Will Genia, Matt Giteau and Adam Ashley-Cooper, will boost the Wallabies’ confidence as the aforementioned players will provide experience in key positions – something which was sadly lacking in that lost series against England.

New Zealand have also lost several experienced campaigners after the World Cup although they showed against Wales that the absence of retired Test veterans Richie McCaw, Dan Carter, Ma’a Nonu, Conrad Smith, Keven Mealamu, Tony Woodcock has not had an adverse effect on their game.

An area which the Wallabies will be hoping to exploit, however, is the world champions’ midfield with Ryan Crotty and Malakai Fekitoa, after average Super Rugby campaigns for the Crusaders and Highlanders respectively, not expected to instill the same kind of fear in their opponents in the way that the old firm of Nonu and Smith did.

With this match also serving as the latest installment of the battle for the Bledisloe Cup, New Zealand will be determined to continue their dominance as the Wallabies have not held the famous trophy since 2002, with the All Blacks winning or retaining the trophy 13 times since then.

Both teams have been trying to gain the upper hand with the some psychological warfare in the build-up to this Test but the verbal jabs traded by Wallabies head coach Michael Cheika and his All Blacks counterpart Steve Hansen will have little impact on the result.

If the Wallabies want to win this clash much will depend on their tactical kicking out of hand. They came up short in this department against England and by picking Giteau, Cheika is admitting that he got his selection wrong by opting to play Samu Kerevi – who is more of a ball carrier – at inside centre position for the first two Tests against England.

Interestingly, Australia have 13 players who were in their starting line-up when these teams met in last year’s Rugby World Cup Final at Twickenham while New Zealand only have seven.

Apart from their successful run in the Bledisloe Cup, New Zealand have dominated this fixture over the years, winning 106 out of the 155 Tests between these countries with Australia victorious on 42 occasions and seven matches drawn, two of which were in the last four years.

Rugby struggles for a place in the forefront of Australian media coverage much of the time but when they detect blood in All Blacks waters they soon start circling – and Saturday night’s Bledisloe Cup decider in Auckland is the latest example.

Apparently the Aussie trainspotters have sifted through the tea leaves and found that they have a great reputation for being party poopers in times of celebration in the New Zealand game.

Clearly, Richie McCaw is set to become the most capped player in Test rugby when moving to 142 caps, one more than Brian O’Driscoll.

The game will be the final All Blacks appearance at home for McCaw, Dan Carter, who is playing his 88th Test at first five-eighth which equals Steven Jones of Wales’ record (although that stat slipped by the Aussie soothsayers), Conrad Smith, Ma’a Nonu and Keven Mealamu.

That’s every reason for the Wallabies to use the motivation of upsetting the All Blacks’ celebrations.

But stop, there’s more. The Test is also a chance for the All Blacks to extend their winning sequence of series with the Cup to 13.

The record is 12, held jointly by McCaw’s men and the All Blacks team from 1951 to 1978. It was in the one-off Test in 1979 that the Aussies finally got their hands on the Bledisloe Cup, something that had been found in a broom cupboard at the New Zealand Rugby Union headquarters because it had been so long since anyone had given it a second thought.

Well having their hands on it again wasn’t enough, and the Aussies of 1979 decided to take the Bledisloe Cup on not one, but two, laps of honour of the Sydney Cricket Ground.

The New Zealanders didn’t like that much and they got their hands back on it as quick as they could.

More recently the Australians used a game in Hong Kong, the fourth in a year, to end what had been a 10-game winning streak over them by the All Blacks and then in 2012 the All Blacks had the chance to equal the record for most unbeaten Tests at 17 held by the side of 1965-69. But the Aussies proved party poopers again with a 12-12 draw.

There are other examples too. But in the cold light of day do all the statistical variables matter a jot to the New Zealanders?

As various players attending the pre-Test press conferences have been at pains to point out, all the emotions, all the farewells and all the records can be worried about after the game.

All they have on their minds is winning the Test after the disappointment they had in Sydney.

Coach Steve Hansen has said, “This game is one of the best challenges we could have.”

And so it is. The need to win, to reverse last weekend’s setback, will be motivation enough for the All Blacks.

Although the intrigue around what might possibly be the shape of the squad named to attend the Rugby World Cup continues with three changes to the team that lost in Sydney. Ma’a Nonu is back from his shoulder injury at second five-eighths, Samuel Whitelock is back at lock while the inclusion of Victor Vito on the blindside flank is an intriguing option.

Clearly there are still some answers the selectors are seeking and most stones should have been turned over by the end of Saturday’s game.

As Hansen said as it was the side’s last match at home this year and ‘it’s important that we deliver a performance that we can be proud of in front of our home fans’.

That matters more than celebrating statistical milestones after all.

Players released for ITM Cup games this weekend are: Cory Jane (Wellington), James Broadhurst (Taranaki), Matt Todd and Patrick Osborne (Canterbury).

Bledisloe Cup 2 Wallabies may make changes for decider against All Blacks

August 12, 2015 by admin Leave a Comment

Wallabies coach Michael Cheika talks to players during an Australia training session at Tramway Oval outside the SCG on Tuesday

Coach Michael Cheika says he may make some changes to his winning Wallabies team for Saturday’s Bledisloe Cup decider against New Zealand in Auckland.

Cheika would not be drawn on whether the changes might include the halves, after bench players Nic White and Matt Toomua were key figures in last Saturday’s win over the All Blacks after starters Nick Phipps and Bernard Foley had struggled.

He suggested changes would not be purely based on form as he continued to look at different combinations ahead of the World Cup starting next month.

“There might be a few changes. After we train this afternoon the coaches will sit down and discuss what we think is the best combination over there,” said Cheika.

“We’ll have a look at what the weather might do over there as well and just see what the best combination for us is.

“We’ve looked at moving things around most week. I’m really keen on guys being able to slip in and out.”

Veteran centre Matt Giteau was given an extra day’s recovery and did not train on Tuesday morning while fullback Israel Folau did not do contact work because of a leg bruise and prop Scott Sio finished the session early after getting a poke in the eye.
